Resort Girl Living Large in the Off-Season

December 7, 2015

Want extra perks, extra services, and upgrades galore – and sometimes even the whole place to yourself? Travel in the off season.

Today, I ventured to one of my favorite spots on the island, and I pretty much had the spot to myself. Some may find this a bit lonely… others may find it heavenly. I am one of those who enjoy the peacefulness of winter beach days.

That is the nature of resorts… they run in seasons, just as nature does. The spring and summer are abundant with buds, bees, and beautiful blooming trees AND packed coastal resorts. Everyone is ready to shed their winter gear and chill out in the sunshine.

But in December, the birds remain at the ocean, and those 70 degree temperatures make many days a glorious day in the sunshine. Today was such a day as I walked on the beach.

Don’t get me wrong, I love winter resorts as they offer some really cool adventures (which I will be sharing this winter.) I don’t shy away from them, even though I love the warm weather resorts.

You may have to wear a light sweater over your suit, but it is a delight to be sunlight and walk barefoot on the sand, Resort Girls – just like the tiny birds!

Many of your favorite sunny spots may be closed, but others remain open, and they will take extra care of you… and remember you when the crowds come once again!

To me, there is something cozy about seeing the sunset at the ocean while bundled up around a bonfire, or having a party at your resort clubhouse deck around an outdoor blazing fireplace heating up all the fun. It makes the crowds come closer and the conversations too.

And many times, the chefs will treat you to something extra special, Resort Girls. The off-season gives them time to make it up JUST for you! From past experience, I can tell you this holds true for me!

So, walk with the winter birds this winter Resort Girls and write your name in the sand….

A Natural Holiday Season

December 4, 2015

Pine cones, acorns, poinsettias, fresh pine needles even cotton balls… all of these elements naturally bring good cheer to the holiday season. Oh, and add some fresh apple cider!

This Resort Girl is not a very good interior decorator, so I rely on others for ideas, and one of my favorite places to visit is RW Interiors during the holiday season. Resort Girl Rhonda White, closes her shop for one day to transform it into a holiday house of decorating ideas.

I always have it on my agenda to drop by for some finds and inspiration. This year, I loved how fresh pine needles were everywhere — even behind chairs and couches. Just think of the aroma in the air of your home with the natural – not bottled – scents. And how a beautiful sewn posetta pillow can create a warm accent.

I loved how the cotton blossoms were the focus of the centerpiece on the dining table. Also, the hurricane candles were filled with fresh coffee beans to give even more natural aroma to the air.

Resort Girl holiday craft parties and even fundraisers are a great place to make natural decorations – while supporting conservation efforts. Our resort community garden held a fundraiser where we sold wreaths and had tables full of ribbons and such to decorate on the spot. Talented RGs were on hand to help those who needed a little creative boost – like this RG! I was the sales person – utilizing my talents – but got some help from my BFF RG to decorate mine.

Another cute idea for kids, I saw at The Roost shop in Bluffton, SC opened by Resort Girl, LaCreasa Allen. It was a natural basket full of cloth elves and reindeer – those would be dear treats for young Resort Girls.

And then I eyed the yummy honey lollipops. I had never seen those before, but they make a great alternative to  spoons for stirring a Resort Girl’s morning or afternoon tea. They are also a great way to top off a holiday hostess gift!

There are so many ways to naturally bring in the Holidays – these are just a few beautiful ways. Resort Girls, please share your personal tips to bringing in the outdoors to celebrate the season of joy and cheer. And Happy Holiday wishes Resort Girls for a joyous season!

Resort Girl Gets To Tour Like a PGA Pro

November 27, 2015
RG-Homepage

What’s it like to play like a PGA Pro? I’m not sure about that, but I did get to experience what it’s to relax like one.

As I was finishing my breakfast, Megan the hostess at the Harbour Town Links, invited me to a private tour of the (now fully operational) men’s locker room. If you play the historic Harbour Town course at Sea Pines Resort in S.C., both men and women get access to the beautifully renovated new Clubhouse — and locker rooms.

As blogged earlier, I got to sneak into the men’s locker rooms after hours. But this time, I got to live the life of a PGA Tour Pro – for 15 minutes. Many thanks to Mr. Dave Thompson, one of the many who run this impressive relaxation area, for letting this Resort Girl experience it – and boy is it the man cave of all man caves!

First, the view is spectacular from the second story deck overlooking the fairways, putting green and driving range.

Golf-Greens

That’s what the pros are here for, as well as the everyday golfers… to enjoy the historic Harbour Town golf course. I played it long ago when I lived at Sea Pines. In fact, Sea Pines is where I first took up the game of golf and got my first lesson.

But today, I was Resort “Guy” relaxing. First, Mr. Thompson showed me the delicious menu offered in the locker room featuring everything from delicious chicken wings and bison sliders to fried white cheddar pimento bites. Also, there are big canisters of free treats to just snack on while relaxing in the room.

Cannisters

While eating or just relaxing, a Resort Guy can play cards, watch the big screen TV or even have a putting contest. He could also chill with a cocktail on the rocks (or whatever a RG likes), watching others practice and play from the impressive second story deck.

Resort Guys can relax like Resort Girls do in our spas, in a comfy white robe after showering in some pretty impressive marble showers. The most spectacular place for some relaxation and rest is in the impressive sauna. The blue tiles and manly size makes it a pretty awesome site for the eyes and, I think, for the body too… but remember I am a Resort Girl, so will have to just imagine that experience.

It was fun imagining I was a PGA Tour Pro for the day! Mr. Thompson and the entire team at Harbour Town made it an experience for even the amateur Resort Guy golfer.

I am just not sure which PGA Pro locker I would like to imagine using….and, you know, it was not much different than being a Resort Girl amateur player for the day on this beautiful golf course and relaxing in the awesome women’s locker room.

Artist/Surfer Toby Hayes Brings His Free Spirit to the Canvas

November 20, 2015
THayesmountainwaves

Toby Hayes brings his passion for surfing and travel into his artwork – whether painting a canvas, a surfboard, or even designing a shower. His artistic and craftsman skills show how one can bring the resort life into every day life through artwork and even home construction.

Toby was a professional surfer, traveling the world and living in Hawaii at one point, but he has had the love of art from childhood (he began painting at the age of 14.) His son, Logan Hayes, now competes, keeping the RG lifestyle in the family.

“The value of memories and knowledge gathered by experiencing wonderful things especially through travel are like putting money in the bank of the soul” – Toby Hayes

Toby and I go back to high school, as we both hung out in Winter Park, Florida – my childhood hometown. Winter Park is a little gem of a town near Orlando with brick lined streets, shaded by mature trees and surrounded by gleaming lakes. I plan to do a Resort Girl road trip back home soon. It is a great place for all Resort Girls and Guys to visit.

Toby had his art studio in Winter Park for many years, and has now relocated, expanding his offerings into such things as Balinese furnishings from his new studio in Vero Beach, Florida. Like all RG & Gs, Toby likes to live free… and that means relocating when your life calls you to another special place.

TobyStudioDesk

Toby’s favorite aspects of art are water and lighting, capturing them in all their vibrant hues. Toby also likes to draw the world under the sea, which appeals to the mermaid in me. His main passion is the ocean, using it as the backdrop of many paintings, but one of my favorites are his flowers, as captured in this dynamic piece.

TobyhayesFlower

Toby even likes to catch the hues of the beach in abstract form, as well as the colors of the waves reflecting against a sunrise or sunset.

RG-Sunset

Living the resort life seems to fit Toby Hayes and he captures it, down to every detail in his beautiful paintings – even, at times, using a hair to capture the smallest of swirls and waves.

You can see more of Toby’s work, both art and craftsmanship, by visiting his site and follow him as he chases the waves and walks the breathtaking beaches around the world – living the Resort Guy life!
